How to Apply for Visa Health Insurance, Step by Step
An application runs from checking your route to choosing a plan, eligibility assessment, payment and finally the certificate. Give yourself time before your visa deadline: a declared health history or a missing document can make the process longer.
The six steps
- Confirm the route and authority. Work from the current checklist issued by your consulate, the UGE or the residence office.
- Check nationality and age. These decide which Residents version and product tier may be available.
- Choose the appropriate plan. Compare only the plans you're eligible for.
- Complete the application and medical questions honestly. Sanitas contacts applicants where health history is declared.
- Accept the approved terms and arrange payment. With a Spanish or other European IBAN, the premium can be paid annually or half-yearly; card payment is for annual payment. A Spanish bank account is not always required. Your quote confirms the payment options for your application.
- Receive and review the visa certificate. The certificate follows Sanitas's acceptance, processing and the required payment. We don't quote a fixed delivery time. Before you submit it, make sure the names, passport details and dates match your application.
Documents
Have your passport, applicant details, Spanish destination, intended dates and the official route checklist to hand. You can apply with a passport only; an NIE is not required initially. For families, every applicant must be properly named. We'll confirm which payment details your application needs before it goes in.
Choosing the start date
Cover normally starts on the first day of the month you select, and policies may be arranged up to six months ahead. Before you pick the month, read when your cover should start.
Where applications get stuck
The usual culprits are identity details that don't match, the wrong nationality version, health history disclosed late and too little time left before the appointment.
