Student Visa Financial Evidence and Sponsors

A Spanish student visa asks you to show 100% of the IPREM index for each month of your stay, which is €600 a month in 2026. Family members coming with you add 75% of the IPREM for the first person and 50% for each other person. The money can be your own or come from family, a grant or a scholarship. Accommodation paid in advance for the whole stay also counts.

How much

WhoMonthly amountIn 2026
The student100% of the IPREM€600
First family member75% of the IPREM€450
Each further family member50% of the IPREM€300

These are monthly amounts for the length of the stay. The IPREM is set in the State Budget, and the 2023 figure still applies in 2026. Money set aside for the course fees themselves doesn't count towards these amounts.

What counts as means

The ministry's criteria accept any means of proof, assessed case by case, including:

  • your own funds;
  • funds from family members;
  • grants, subsidies and scholarships;
  • accommodation paid in advance for the whole stay, which counts towards the monthly amount at its value;
  • accommodation owned by a relative up to the second degree. This counts if you prove the relationship and the relative's right to the property, and the relative signs a declaration that you can stay there for the length of the authorisation.

The regulation also counts an exchange programme's commitment to take responsibility for the student, and, where the authorisation allows work, a valid job contract or firm job offer.

If a parent or sponsor is paying

Where family money supports you, the consulate looks at the sponsor's funds and their commitment to you. Consulates set their own requirements for the letter and the supporting evidence, such as the sponsor's bank statements and proof of the relationship. Check the checklist for your consulate, and expect documents issued abroad to need an apostille and a sworn translation.

Presenting the evidence

  • Match the period. Show enough for the whole stay, not just the first months.
  • Name the source. Bank documents should show whose funds they are and that they're available.
  • Keep it consistent. The amounts in the sponsor letter, the bank statements and any accommodation contract should agree.
  • Show grants in writing. A grant or scholarship letter should state the amount and period.

If family members are coming

Only students in higher education or specialised health training can bring family members. The family amounts above are added to the student's. See student family members.

Common mistakes

  • Showing one month instead of the whole stay. The amount is monthly, for the length of the stay.
  • Counting tuition money twice. Funds for the course fees don't count towards living costs.
  • A sponsor letter with no evidence. The commitment needs the sponsor's funds behind it.

We don't pass your details to either service. Choosing one opens its website in a new tab, where you start a separate enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work to support myself?

Higher-education authorisations allow work, as long as it's compatible with your studies and, as a rule, no more than 30 hours a week. A firm job offer can count as means. Ask your service how this applies to your course.

Does paid student accommodation reduce what I need to show?

Yes. Accommodation paid for the whole stay counts towards the monthly amount at its value.

Is the IPREM going to change?

It's set in the State Budget. The 2023 figure of €600 a month still applies in 2026. Check the current figure before you apply.
