Applying for the Digital Nomad Visa With Your Family

Your spouse or partner, your children (minors, or adults who depend on you financially) and dependent parents or other ascendants can apply with you or later. Each person meets the same general requirements. Your resources have to cover the family too: the UGE asks for at least 75% of the minimum wage on top of your own threshold for the second person, and 25% for each additional member.

Who can come with you

The law lists:

  • your spouse, or a partner in an equivalent relationship;
  • your children under 18, and adult children who depend on you financially and haven't formed their own family;
  • your parents, or other ascendants, who depend on you.

They can apply at the same time as you or later. If they apply at the same time as you, their applications are decided at the same time as yours. The details of how dependency and relationships are proved vary, and your service will check what each person needs.

The income for a family

The UGE sets the thresholds as a share of Spain's minimum wage (SMI):

  • the main applicant: 200% of the SMI per month;
  • a second person (you plus one family member): at least 75% of the SMI on top;
  • each further family member: 25% of the SMI.

The amounts are gross. Savings can make up a shortfall in earnings for the whole period of the authorisation. The 2026 SMI is €1,221 a month, paid 14 times a year. Confirm with your service how the monthly amounts are worked out for your family before you rely on a figure.

What each family member needs

Each person applying needs:

  • a passport;
  • documents proving the relationship to you, such as a marriage certificate, partnership evidence or birth certificates, legalised or apostilled and with a sworn translation where they're not in Spanish;
  • criminal record evidence, where it applies to them; your service will confirm which family members need certificates;
  • health cover that meets the requirement for their circumstances;
  • the fee.

The first family member adds at least 75% of the minimum wage to your income threshold, and each one after that adds 25%.

Every certificate issued abroad needs an apostille or legalisation and, if it isn't in Spanish, a sworn translation.

Joining later

Family members don't have to apply at the same time. If they join later, they show the same requirements, and your resources still have to cover everyone. Plan the timing with your service, especially where documents like criminal record certificates have to be recent.

Health cover for the family

Each family member needs cover that suits their situation, and the right answer depends on how the main applicant is covered. We'll check whether the applicants can be covered together and how each person should appear on the insurance evidence. Our DNV health insurance guide explains the options.

Common mistakes

  • Budgeting for one person. The income threshold rises with each family member.
  • Unlegalised certificates. Birth and marriage certificates from abroad need an apostille or legalisation and a sworn translation.
  • Leaving someone out of the record check. Ask which family members need criminal record certificates.

Frequently asked questions

Can my partner work in Spain?

Ask your service how this applies to your family. The answer depends on the authorisation each person holds, and we don't advise on work rights.

Do my children need the same documents as me?

Children need a passport, proof of the relationship and health cover. Your service will confirm which family members need criminal record certificates.

Can my parents come?

Dependent parents are among the relatives who can apply. Your service will tell you how dependency is shown.
