Spanish Residency Renewal Help
Residence authorisations are renewed in Spain before they expire, and each route has its own conditions:
- Non-lucrative: renewed during the two months before expiry, for two years, with a 183-day residence condition.
- Digital nomad: renewed for two-year periods while the conditions are kept, and filed online.
- Student stays: not renewed but extended (prórroga), course by course.
Renewal by route
| Route | When to file | What you show | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-lucrative | Two months before expiry | Means, continuous health insurance, children in school, more than 183 days in Spain | Two years |
| Digital nomad | Before expiry | The same conditions as the first application | Two years |
| Student | Two months before expiry | Enrolment, means and insurance for the next course | The course, up to a year |
Missed the window?
Each route has a short grace period after expiry: three months for non-lucrative and student permits, 90 days for digital nomad authorisations. A late application still keeps your position valid until the decision, but a penalty procedure can be opened. Treat the grace period as a safety net, not a plan.
A renewal calendar that works for every route
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Three to four months before expiry | Check your insurance end date, your means for the new period and, for the NLV, your days in Spain this calendar year |
| Two months before expiry | The filing window opens for non-lucrative renewals and student extensions |
| On filing | Keep the receipt: a timely application keeps your authorisation valid until the decision |
| After an NLV renewal | Apply in person for the new residence card within a month of the decision being notified |

Your insurance at renewal
Insurance comes up differently on each route. Non-lucrative renewals look back: you need to have held health insurance throughout the authorisation, and to continue it. Student extensions look forward, to cover for the next course. Digital nomad renewals depend on how your health cover was provided in the first place. If you're changing policy around a renewal, talk to us before cancelling anything. See renewing your visa insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new insurance certificate to renew?
Often, yes. The office may ask for evidence that the policy covers the renewal period. We'll tell you what your current policy shows.
