Pre-Existing Conditions and Visa Health Insurance
Declared medical history is assessed by the insurer, Sanitas, whose Residents and International Students pages say that applicants who declare conditions are contacted for medical assessment. So a condition should be disclosed accurately and reviewed before anyone promises cover or a visa-ready policy.
Medical underwriting and waiting periods are different
A waiting period delays access to a covered service for a set time after a policy starts. Medical underwriting looks at the health information you declare when you apply.
Sanitas says waiting periods are waived in Residents Visado. That waiver doesn't automatically cover a declared pre-existing condition; declared health history is assessed separately by the underwriting team.
What happens after a condition is declared?
Sanitas says it contacts applicants who declare medical history.
Why this matters for a visa applicant
You need to know that the policy and certificate you receive match the evidence your route asks for, and a general quote can't tell you that while a medical assessment is still open. Allow time for the assessment before a consular appointment; your application isn't complete until the insurer has confirmed it.
Answer accurately
Include every diagnosis, treatment and medication the questions ask about, even if it seems minor. If the underwriting team asks for supporting information, provide it in the way they ask.
Privacy
If there's anything medical we need to discuss, we'll handle it privately.
Couples and families
Each person's medical history may need assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Will a pre-existing condition stop my visa?
There's no single answer: it depends on the insurer's underwriting decision and on the evidence the relevant authority requires. No insurance adviser, including us, can guarantee a visa decision.
Does no waiting period mean all previous conditions are covered?
No. The waiting-period waiver on its own tells you nothing about how a condition is underwritten; the two are separate.
Should I put medical information in the quote form?
No. If there's anything medical we need to discuss, we'll handle it privately. If Sanitas needs medical information, it contacts you to assess it.
