Who Can Get Visa Health Insurance for Spain?
Eligibility depends on more than the name of your visa. Nationality and residence status come first, followed by age, medical history, who's in the household and where you'll live. A product can suit the visa category and still be the wrong version for the person applying.
1. Nationality and residence status
Sanitas reserves Residents Visado for nationals outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. It lists standard Residents for EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, with waiting periods and a minimum stay of six months a year in Spain.
EU registration has its own legal evidence requirements. A non-working EU citizen may need comprehensive sickness cover under EU law, so find out what evidence your registration office accepts.
2. Age
- Residents and Residents Visado: join through age 75, until the month of the 76th birthday.
- Residents Platinum and Platinum Visado: join through age 64, until the month of the 65th birthday.
- International Students: at least 14 and under 35 when applying.
3. Medical history
Sanitas states that applicants who declare health history are contacted for medical assessment. The student product uses a similar medical-department review.
Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions are different things. A Visado version that waives standard waiting periods shouldn't be read as automatic cover for every declared condition. Read about pre-existing conditions.
4. Family composition
For Residents, children aged 0–2 can only be insured alongside another insured person aged two or older. For the standard (non-Visado) Residents product, Sanitas publishes a discount for four or more insured people; Visado versions are priced from household tariff tables. Each applicant's eligibility is still assessed individually.
5. Where you will live
We can't currently arrange policies for people living in Cantabria (including Santander) or Navarra. This is a limit on our distribution area, not on the insurer's medical network.
Check eligibility before choosing a plan
Tell us your nationality group, age, visa or residency route, destination province, course details if relevant and how many people need cover. If there's anything medical we need to discuss, we'll handle it privately.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one maximum age for every plan?
No. Residents and Platinum have different joining ages, and International Students has its own age range.
Does “no waiting periods” mean pre-existing conditions are covered?
Not necessarily. Waiting periods and medical underwriting are separate questions.
What if one family member is not eligible?
Ask us for a household review. Family members won't necessarily receive the same underwriting result.
