Residency insurance
Health Insurance for Spanish Residency
Residency cases vary. A first permit, EU registration, a family application and a renewal can each call for different evidence, so we start with your residence route and nationality before recommending a policy version.
Residency versus a visa application
A consular visa is normally requested before travel; some residence procedures are handled in Spain. That changes the authority, the timing and the documents, but it doesn't make a generic policy automatically suitable.
EU registration
Non-working EU citizens may need comprehensive sickness cover under EU law. The evidence a registration office accepts depends on your circumstances, so it's worth confirming what yours asks for. Our EU residency guide covers this route.
Family and renewals
In family cases, the starting point is who must be insured: every applicant must be properly named on the evidence. For a renewal, look at the current authorisation requirements and your existing policy rather than assuming the original certificate is sufficient. Renewals and switches are coordinated so existing cover isn't cancelled before the replacement is accepted.
Which policy fits?
You can apply for Residents and Residents Visado through age 75, until the month of the 76th birthday, and for Platinum and Platinum Visado through age 64, until the month of the 65th birthday. Meeting the age limit doesn't guarantee acceptance: every application is subject to Sanitas's medical assessment and the issued policy documents. The Visado versions are only for nationals outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland.
Which plan suits you, and what evidence you'll need, both depend on nationality and route. See our visa and residency plans.
Evidence to check
- correct insured name and identity details;
- policy version and effective date;
- the document list issued for the route;
- evidence for every family member who needs it;
- whether the authority asks for a new certificate at renewal.
FAQs
What happens to my existing cover if I renew or switch plans?
Renewals and plan switches are coordinated so that your existing cover isn't cancelled before the replacement is accepted. The current renewal checklist for your route is still worth reading alongside it.
