Visa Application Help for Families
Each route has its own definition of family and its own extra financial requirement, and every person needs their own evidence:
- Non-lucrative visa: a spouse or partner and children can apply with you, and you show 100% of the IPREM per family member on top of your own means.
- Digital nomad visa: the family can also include dependent parents, and your resources have to cover everyone.
- Students: only those in higher education or specialised health training can bring family.
- Joining a relative who lives in Spain: family reunification, a separate procedure started by them.
Who counts as family, by route
| Route | Family members | Extra means |
|---|---|---|
| Non-lucrative visa | Spouse, registered or stable partner; unmarried minor children; adult children with a disability needing support, or unable to support themselves because of their health | 100% of the IPREM per month for each family member |
| Digital nomad visa | Spouse or partner; minor children, or adult children who depend on you; dependent parents | At least 75% of the minimum wage for a second person, plus 25% for each additional person |
| Student (higher education or specialised health training only) | Spouse, registered or stable partner; unmarried minor children; adult children needing support | 75% of the IPREM for the first family member, 50% for each further person |
| Family reunification | Includes: spouse or partner over 18, children under 18, adult children who need support, dependent parents over 65 (the sponsor's or the partner's), and some other cases | The sponsor shows 150% of the IPREM for two people, plus 50% per extra person |
Joining a relative who already lives in Spain
Family reunification is started by the relative living in Spain. As a rule, they can apply once they've lived in Spain for at least a year and have applied to stay for at least another year. Your authorisation is granted only once theirs has been renewed. The sponsor shows regular resources for the family, and the relationship has to be proved with documents. This route is a separate procedure from the visas above, and timing depends on the sponsor's status.
What every family member needs
- their own passport and application;
- documents proving the relationship, legalised or apostilled and with a sworn translation where needed (see documents, translations and apostilles);
- for adults, the criminal record evidence the route asks for;
- health insurance that meets the route's requirement.

Frequently asked questions
Do children need their own insurance?
Each person who applies needs cover that meets the route's requirements. We'll check whether the applicants can be covered together and how each person should appear on the insurance evidence.
Can family members join later?
On the digital nomad route, family members can apply with you or later. On the non-lucrative route, ask your service about timing. Students' family members can join while at least 90 days of the student's authorisation remain.
Can my parents come with me?
On the digital nomad route, dependent parents can apply. Under family reunification, dependent parents over 65 can be reunited in limited circumstances. They aren't listed as family members for non-lucrative or student applications.
