Sanitas Residents Platinum: When the Upgrade Is Worth It
Residents Platinum is the broader version of Residents, for people who value substantial reimbursement outside the Sanitas network. You don't need it just because you're applying for a visa. What matters is whether the right product version is available to you, whether you're within the joining-age limit and whether you'll actually use the extra benefits.
Who it suits
Platinum is most relevant if you want the flexibility to see doctors outside the network, expect to travel internationally, or value its additional pharmacy, dental and hospital benefits. Sanitas states that it reimburses 90% of eligible costs with any doctor, up to €500,000 per insured person per year, worldwide.
If you expect to use the network's own doctors and hospitals most of the time, Residents Visado may be the more direct option. Compare both plans.
Standard and Visado versions
Sanitas presents Residents Platinum in a standard version with waiting periods and a Visado version in which waiting periods are waived. The Visado version is for nationals outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. If you're an EU, EEA or Swiss national, the Visado version isn't available to you.
Copayments and waiting periods
Residents Platinum has no copayments. Sanitas describes the Visado version as suitable for visa applications, with a visa certificate and waived waiting periods. That doesn't tell you how a declared pre-existing condition will be treated: medical history is assessed separately, as part of underwriting.
Joining age
Residents Platinum and Platinum Visado can be taken out through age 64, until the month of the applicant's 65th birthday. There is no maximum age to remain insured.
If you're aged 65–75, Residents or Residents Visado is the option to look at instead. See insurance choices for applicants over 60.

Discounts and billing facts
The standard Residents Platinum product publishes discounts of 5% for two or three insured people, 10% for four or more and 4% for annual payment. Those discounts belong to the standard product; your visa-version quote shows its own premium. Sanitas also states that health insurance has no VAT and that a 0.15% Consorcio surcharge is applied to the annual premium on the first bill.
Platinum Visado is priced from its own dated April 2026 tariffs by age, area and number of insured people (individual, two or three, or four or more insured); they apply in the first year to new insured people whose cover starts from 1 April through 31 December 2026.
Your dated quote shows the exact Platinum Visado premium for your profile.
Renewal
Sanitas says the policy renews automatically after twelve months unless it is cancelled at least one month before renewal. If you're thinking of switching, ask us to review the product first, because a switch may involve product-specific underwriting.
Frequently asked questions
Is Platinum necessary for a Spanish visa?
No. Its value is the additional cover and reimbursement, not a higher visa status. Choose based on eligibility and the healthcare access you want.
Does Platinum cover care with doctors outside the network?
Sanitas publishes 90% reimbursement of eligible costs up to €500,000 per insured person per year, subject to the policy terms.
Can someone aged 65 take it out?
No. The maximum joining age is 64. Residents may remain an option through age 75.
Can we arrange it everywhere in Spain?
Not quite. We can't currently arrange policies for people living in Cantabria (including Santander) or Navarra. This is a limit on our distribution area, not on the insurer's medical network.
