Digital Nomad Visa Renewal Help

A digital nomad (DNV) residence authorisation can be renewed for two-year periods as long as you still meet the conditions that gave you the right to it. The renewal is filed online with the immigration authorities in Spain. Filing in time keeps your authorisation valid until the decision.

What you show again

The renewal tests whether the conditions still hold:

  • remote work for companies outside Spain, with self-employed work for Spanish companies still within 20% of your activity;
  • sufficient resources for you and your family;
  • your Social Security position;
  • the health cover that applies to you.

The authorities can ask for reports on whether you've kept the conditions.

Timing

  • Before expiry: filing extends the authorisation until the decision.
  • Late: an application within 90 days after expiry also extends it, but a penalty procedure can be opened.
  • Length: each renewal is for two years.

If you came in on the consulate visa rather than a residence authorisation, the next step isn't a renewal. You apply for the residence authorisation in the 60 days before the visa expires. See UGE or consulate.

Your renewal, step by step

  1. A few months before expiry. Check that your work still fits the route, update your income evidence and confirm your Social Security contributions.
  2. Check your health cover. If it comes from a private policy, make sure it runs through the renewal period.
  3. Before the expiry date. File the renewal online; filing in time keeps your authorisation valid until the decision.
  4. If the authorities ask. They can request reports on whether you've kept the conditions, so keep your records to hand.
  5. After the decision. Book your new residence card appointment.

What renewal help usually covers

  • checking that your work arrangement still fits the route, including any change of employer or clients;
  • updated income evidence for you and your family;
  • your Social Security contributions during the authorisation;
  • the health cover evidence for the renewal period;
  • preparing and filing the renewal, and the residence card afterwards.

Keep your insurance continuous

If your health cover comes from a private policy, keep it running through the renewal and check that the certificate covers the renewal period. We help with renewals and plan changes so your existing cover isn't cancelled before the replacement is accepted. See renewing your visa insurance.

Common mistakes

  • A changed job you haven't reported. The UGE's guidance says changes affecting the conditions of the authorisation must be communicated within 30 days.
  • Spanish clients creeping above 20%. The limit applies throughout, not just at the first application.
  • Letting the visa lapse. Visa holders apply for the residence authorisation, not a renewal, and within the 60 days before expiry.
