Non-Lucrative Visa Application Cost

Both visa-processing services in our group publish €1,499 for a new non-lucrative visa (NLV) application for one adult, paid in stages. On top of the service fee you may pay the consulate's visa fee, the cost of your certificates, any apostilles and translations beyond what's included, and your health insurance. Confirm in writing whether the consulate fee is included. Prices on this page were checked on 24 October 2026.

What each fee includes

My Spanish NLV names these in its fee: an eligibility check before any payment, a document checklist made for you, preparation of the whole file, sworn translations into Spanish up to a set allowance, the finished file delivered to you, a case manager with an online dashboard, and a briefing before the consulate appointment.

Platinum Legal Spain names these in its fee: a case manager until approval, the forms, templates and cover letters, translations included up to €80, an online portal, and help with registering for the residence card once you're in Spain.

The translation allowance, the treatment of official fees and the payment schedule are the details to check. The provider's published pages describe this differently. Confirm the current allowance and payment schedule in writing before instructing them.

If the application is refused

The providers describe different arrangements following a refusal. Check the engagement terms before paying.

What you pay separately

My Spanish NLV names three costs outside its fee: the consulate's visa fee, your criminal record certificate with its apostille, and your health insurance premium. With either service, confirm in writing which official fees, if any, are included for your household before you start.

  • The consulate visa fee. Set by each consulate, often by nationality. See the examples below.
  • Your criminal record certificate. Charged by the authority that issues it, plus an apostille.
  • Translations beyond the allowance. These grow with each family member and each supporting document the consulate asks for.
  • Your health insurance. An annual premium paid to the insurer, depending on age, area, plan and household. See visa and residency health insurance cost.
  • Costs to ask about. The medical certificate, and the residence card (TIE) fee and local registration after you arrive.

NLV consulate fees: published examples

Consulate fees for the NLV vary widely with nationality, under reciprocity. Examples from consulate pages checked on 24 October 2026:

Where you applyWhoPublished NLV visa fee
LondonBritish nationals£516
WashingtonUS citizens$140, plus $13 for the residence authorisation
WashingtonBritish nationals$691
WashingtonCanadian nationals$789
WashingtonOther nationalities$106
TorontoCanadian nationalsCAD 1,085

These are paid to the consulate, not to either service. Payment methods vary too: some US and Canadian consulates accept only money orders or bank drafts. Check your consulate's current fee list before you budget.

Applying as a couple or family

Each service quotes its own family rate. Every extra person also adds documents to legalise and translate, a consulate fee and a health insurance policy, so the costs outside the fee grow faster than the fee itself. Each family member also raises the financial requirement, by 100% of the IPREM index per month. See applying as a family.

Renewal later

The first NLV is followed by a renewal in Spain, which is a separate application with its own fee. Both services charge €699 for an NLV renewal for one adult. Platinum Legal Spain takes it as €299 to start and €400 at submission to the immigration office. See NLV renewal help.

Budgeting tips

  • Get the certificates in the order your service suggests, so you don't pay to replace one that has expired.
  • Count your documents early: translation is usually priced per page or document, and family files run to many pages.
  • Quote the insurance for everyone applying, not just the main applicant.
  • Keep a margin for the costs after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Is the health insurance included?

No. The NLV policy is separate, with its own annual premium for each person insured.

Why does the consulate fee differ so much?

It's set by reciprocity with your nationality, so a British, Canadian and US applicant can pay very different amounts at the same consulate.
